Studies in Shapes and Shadows-Tree #1

I am intrigued by the "tree skeletons" here as I travel the southern portion of Arizona this winter.I decided that doing paint studies of them would give me good practice on rendering shapes and shadows. I love how they twist and turn!

I love a Spring Morning! Original Oil Painting by Rebecca Jennings (Sunny)

Spring Mornings... just when the snow is gone, grass is starting to green, and the tops of the trees are turning reddish, just about to burst open with new life! Another sure sign of Spring is the sighting of  the red-winged blackbird near the edges of ponds, or near open fields.

"Gone Fishin' " - Original Oil Painting by Rebecca Jennings

After a hard day's work at the shop, some of the guys in my family would grab their poles and take off to a favorite fishing spot, hoping to catch a few trout. This one seems to be having trouble keeping a hook on his line....

Royal Flush

I took this picture of my backyard a few evenings before Christmas.  This place is a haven for me, with my hen houses and colorful chickens, the rabbit pens where I listen to my bunnies munching on greens, and my raised bed gardens where I can get my hands in the dirt and harvest some good homegrown food!
This sunset over my special place just begged to be painted!

Biloxi-Gulfport Beach Scene (with artist license :)

 "Tranquility"
10" x 20"

This scene is from a reference photo and a quick painting sketch I did last year on my RV trip. Biloxi MS is where my eldest daughter was born. I wanted to re-visit the beach I used to visit when she was a wee baby. As she loves the water and beaches I decided to do this peaceful scene to hang in her coastal-color theme bedroom.

Last of the Summer Painting

Another trip to Fisherman's Cove yielded about 75% of this painting. The weather was so nice but started to get chilly late afternoon, I brought it home and finished in the studio. At least I think it is finished for now. I'll have to think about it .....

Snow Moon -Feb 4, 2015

Have you heard of the "snow moon"? I hadn't until this year. It is the first full moon in February.
My daughter took this photo from her upstairs window about 4 am. As I am traveling, I of course missed the beautiful scene, but not the deep snow that has come since then!

Day 28-29-30 30 Paintings/ 30 Days Painting Challenge

Day 28 -  I love the desert and find it so very peaceful there. I will be heading that way very soon, and can hardly wait to be back there again!
"Desert Campfire"
4" x 4" mini, oil on canvas panel

Day 29 - Meanwhile, I captured these birds through my window on my phone camera a couple mornings ago. They were drinking and playing in the water left by recent rains. I watched their antics for a time as they went to the water and back again. It doesn't take much to make me laugh.
"You Lookin' at Me?"

Day 30 - This painting is from a photo taken of my RV 2 yrs ago on my last journey west. My intention was to head that way soon as this challenge was finished but it seems the Lord has other plans for me and I will have to forgo that journey for another year.

I'm finished!! This challenge helped me learn several things about painting and about myself.

Day 25-26-27 30 Paintings/ 30 Days Painting Challenge

Day 25 - My favorite snack is apples with peanut butter.
It's a great "get-over-the-I-need-dessert" substitute; a good-for-you protein and energy filler!
I enjoyed painting the different colors in this Gala apple!
"Gala Apple"
4" x 4" mini, oil on canvas panel

Day 26  - This scene is at the top of the hill from the Camp Huaco Springs campground. I would drive up there for signal to make phone calls. This is also where I saw the road runner.
"Tree Grove, Texas Hill Country"
4" x 4" oil on canvas panel

Day 27 - This is probably my most favorite of the flower world. These are some I grew while living in Kentucky. As these giant beauties follow the path of the sun, they stand as a reminder to me that the best path in life is to........

Day 16-17-18

Day 16 - After today's events, my paint-box made me smile as I pulled it out. This painting is inspired by last night's sunset at Camp Huaco Springs near New Braunfels, TX.

Day 17-  I was fortunate to see this funny little bird in a field late afternoon a couple days ago. I didn't know what it was until I saw it in action. The comical movements cheered my day!
 "Roadrunner"
4" x 4" mini, oil on canvas

Day 18 - Running a little behind... But still going! What a challenge this one was!
I was determined to try this as I love  icicles! My eldest daughter sent me this photo taken out her window a couple mornings ago. It reminded me of a song I remembered from many years ago.

Day 7 - Painting Challenge, 30 Paintings / 30 Days

I have been away all winter so far, and do miss painting the snow scenes, so I went through my old photos and found this one from last year. This is a phenomena that happens when the winter conditions are just right. This was from a photo of a field just past my neighbor's home last winter. These are called snow bales, snow rolls or snow curls depending on where you heard about them.

Day 4 - Painting Challenge, 30Paintings / 30 Days

"Texas Hill Country"
4" x 4" mini, oil on canvas

After leaving Port Aransas I headed west toward New Braunfels, TX. The terrain west of NB changed drastically and I wanted to capture a hint of it on canvas. In stead of flat farm land, the hills appear; there are fossil  rocks, shorter bushier trees and cacti.

Hay Rolls in Mississippi

The last of the hay season in Mississippi is quite late, lasting into the month of December.
I loved seeing this wheat-colored field and the contrasting shadows from the trees that lined the road. The photo had been taken while traveling the back roads near my daughter's home during my visit. I did not get to paint it until after leaving there.

Beach Scene

As I was leaving Mississippi, I wanted to visit the beaches near where my eldest child was born. I was able to park my RV in one of the pull-offs and take a nice long walk, savoring the memories as I wandered. I took several pictures along the way, especially for her. Neither one of us had been there since 1963, the year she was born.
I decided to do a quick sketch painting of the scene. She loves it so much I promised her a large one for their bedroom which is painted a sea-grey and has ocean accents as part of the décor.

Beauty of Nature

We are not always aware of the beauty in the most mundane things of life until we slow down enough to really look.  This is not really a wildflower but is a wild grass that grows profusely  in fields and pastures, mostly in the southern states. It is the bane of many farmers and ranchers as it chokes the more nutritive grasses fed on by livestock. I, however, have always liked the almost independent look of the stocks.

First Camping site of Autumn

I love camping at my favorite place in Kentucky and will always stop there on the way through, This is my 4th painting of Energy Lake at Land Between the Lakes. It is just so peaceful there and it has been a good 1st stop to unwind and a last refresher before the final leg of the journey home.

Desert Nocturne

Although I was not able to complete my 30 paintings in 30 days challenge, I will likely try again later on. I had to leave the desert early as I had come down with a severe case of food poisoning. I did make it back to Tucson where I finished recuperating. Fortunately, I was able to paint this scene the day before getting sick.

"Moonlit Desert Near the Mountains of Ajo"
8" x 10' Oil on Canvas
(a "through-the-window" painting)

Boondock camping in the desert near Ajo, Arizona, I awoke early one morning and could not get back to sleep. The moon was very bright and I was enjoying the peacefulness outside my rv window. There is a gigantic cross lit every night on the mountain over the little town of Ajo. It happened to be in perfect view at 3 am that morning. I captured this scene by using my little 4" flashlight to look at my paint and canvas. I had such fun painting this one!

Saguaro at Sunset 30/30 #17

'Saguaro at Sunset"
4" x 5"
Oil on stretched canvas

This is part of the painting challenge to jump-start my painting efforts for 2013.
My theme is centered on my travels this winter in my 1996 29' Winnebago RV. I am having such fun painting some of the main types of cacti I have seen her near Tucson, AZ. Improving and diversifying my painting subjects has been one of the main goals of my travels. My goals for this challenge are to pick up speed in my painting, and be freer in my use of color and brushwork.
This challenge has been offered by artist Leslie Saeta. Link here to join in or see paintings of other artists. I am glad to be participating in this challenge, and seeing the efforts of other artists as well.
Some of my paintings are available. If you see something you are interested in purchasing or would like me to do a commission for you, please email me privately at sunnybrook.7@gmail.com for details on pricing .
