Spring Mornings... just when the snow is gone, grass is starting to green, and the tops of the trees are turning reddish, just about to burst open with new life! Another sure sign of Spring is the sighting of  the red-winged blackbird near the edges of ponds, or near open fields.

Who doesn't remember being told as a child, that when the robins build their nests, then Spring is truly here! Just off my easel, a painting depicting the Robin who hatched 2 clutches of eggs on the railing of my deck under the shelter of the rhododendron bush last spring. It was so much fun being able to watch this little family close up! Feeding was a round-the-clock job for both parents.

More Sketching.....

I have a face-book friend who spends his winters in the deserts of Arizona, He takes some really neat pictures of the landscapes and wildlife. This is from one of his photos.

Currently working on a couple paintings, but in the meantime I have been doing more sketching. A relaxing change from the sometimes difficult work of  managing color harmony and atmosphere of an oil painting. hope you enjoy viewing my sketches while i take a breather....

When You Can't Paint, Draw.....

Years ago, when I was driving team truck with my husband, hauling military freight after "9 - 11", i had to leave my paints behind as we were sometimes gone 6 weeks - 3 mo at a time, so i carried my hand quilting and sketch pad with me. These are some of the drawings I did at that time. A lot of them are reminiscent of places we stopped; some being on  military bases in the desert.

This little figment of my imagination stemmed from my being homesick until I got used to being away for such long periods of time.

On the left is the beautiful Prickly Pear Cactus that blooms with such pretty blossoms, although I hadn't yet seen them in bloom when I did this drawing. Then there was the dead Joshua Trees, with such unique forms of their trunks and branches!

   

The Creosote Bush is not especially to my liking, but it is part of the desert scenery and so I include it here.   The leaves are smaller and the branches grow denser than what I've portrayed  but I was after the form of the curved branches mostly. ( on the right, bottom)

    

           

                 
This little grouping of three (above)were interesting to me I'm not sure what the little thorny bush is, But the shape was interesting; the middle one is again a prickly pear cactus, and the one on the right is a lovely but dangerous Cholla Cactus, of which their are several varieties, one being nicknamed the "jumpimg cactus". If you get too close the spines are very easily lodged on you and they are very tough to remove!

I hope you enjoyed these drawings and the bit of info I have supplied. I love the diverse terrain of the desert. It is seems such a wonderous place to me and I hope to spend more time there.

After a hard day's work at the shop, some of the guys in my family would grab their poles and take off to a favorite fishing spot, hoping to catch a few trout.This one seems to be having trouble keeping a hook on his line....

My Favorite Things #3, An Original Oil painting by Rebecca Jennings

This spinning wheel was a gift to me from my husband just months before he died. I loved the smooth wood of the wheel and the paddle. The spinner would sit at the right side and work the paddle with their feet to make the wheel go at a smooth, steady speed. The wool would be fed carefully onto the wheel, go full circle and, at the practiced touch of the spinner's hands, come out the other side as yarn to be knitted into warm clothes or woven into blankets. 

This wheel is now in the possession of my eldest daughter who has become a fiber artist in her own right. This painting is a gift to her.
