A 20 Min Exercise ... Christmas Painting #1

I have been disappointed with my painting lately, to the extent of just burning some partially finished works. They made good, but expensive heat in the wood-stove. (sigh)I knew in order to keep from being totally discouraged I had to keep painting, even if it was a small one.

I relate this time in my life to being in a snow storm right now, but the light of Christ will bring me through.

"For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him"

Matt. 2:2

3" x 4 1/2" Oil on stretched canvas

  1. Could have used the partial used canvases by just painting over them. But I do get your point. Right now I feel shot at and hit... Keep trusting Himand we'll make it thru.

  2. Love the light in this, and your composition and mood are wonderful. BTW, use the unfinished and/or rejected paintings as underpaintings for other work - letting bits of the color peek through - makes for an interesting look.

  3. Hey Sunny - I've done that 100's of time. But you can save your canvases. If you don't like them before they are dry, get a rag and turp and wipe 'em down. You'll have a nice toned canvas. The other thing - if it's good a dry, you can sand it a bit and take the rough off, and then use some acrylic gesso and cover up the old painting or use some tinted gesso, maybe a little grey. I'm all for saving $$$!

I hate using those little cheapo canvas on cardboard things. I bought me a roll of cotton canvas, got some 1/8" - 1/4" wood like Luan, and had my daddy cut it into 8x10 and 9x12 panels and glued the canvas onto the boards, used a roller to get all bubbles out, stacked those babies up under some heavy stuff, and used them for small paintings. They're great - I like painting on a hard surface - way cheaper, too... Oh yeah - be sure and gesso the surface.

  4. Ah Becky...what a beautiful picture! It makes me realize the peace that Jesus wants to give us through His birth. So peaceful and calm! I love this!

  5. So beautiful. What a gift God has given you!!!!

  6. ♫ Oh the weather outside is frightful ♪ ♫

You need a fireplace scene to go with this one (with this scene seen out the window). :)

  7. Oh Sunny, I love this. I have missed you for a few days but see that you have been busy. Have a wonderful wonderful Christmas.
