Old Grain Mill

"Old Guthrie Grain Mill"

12 x 16 Oil

Guthrie, KY

I began this painting at the old mill but had to finish in the studio. The rusted old buildings intrigued me. Many think they should be torn down... that it is an eye-sore. I look at this mill as a part of history. I wonder how many farmers with horse-drawn wagons used deliver their grain there.... I imagine them standing around talking with each other, awaiting their turn to unload. I am sure they talked about the upcoming weather, or the prices of the grain, maybe how their family made it through the drought....

  2. A wonderful painting Sunny. I agree with you, you are always too ready to tear down part of our history. I have always said as artists we are preserving history.

  3. Oh I agree - I think we should keep the old buildings - they are beautiful! Around here most were pulled down and it is hard to find a good old building to paint or take photos of. We have to travel quite a ways to find places that people revere the older buildings - it is a sad thing.

  4. Sunny, this is gorgeous! I try to get pictures of some of the old structures whenever I can. One of my students has a whole portfolio of paintings she has done of barns in our area that are no longer in existence. I keep telling her it would make a great book. We are losing these wonderful landmarks much to quickly!

  5. Beautiful grasses in this one, Sunny!

Old places like this remind me of old people. Their memories and life lessons should be greatly honored.

  7. Great job, Sunny! I love anything old like that. You really captured that "rusty" feeling, too. These old places are part of history and part of people's lives - I hate seeing them all torn down. I'm glad you were able to get this place down on canvas before it's gone, too! Hope things are going well for you, my friend!
